The characteristic of sunflowers is to completely follow the sun, and the broken sunflower bottle flower is to turn to light and wither in the Lord. It is to look up and sacrifice - symbolizing the sacrifice of life and looking forward to resurrection. Offer your body as a living sacrifice." ( Romans 12:1)

The rotating brushstrokes in the picture of "Starry Night" not only show the shocking performance, but also reflect the inspiring confidence. On the one hand, it breaks through the understanding of painting, and on the other hand, it also pokes people's inner softness. This is a kind of faith in light, a spiritual call beyond reality. The soul looks up to heaven in the dark night and stretches towards the eternity of God, echoing Psalm 23:4 "The heavens describe the glory of God...".

"I feel that I need, what should I say, religion, and then I go out to draw stars at night." ( To Tio, late April 1888)

[II. The fire of faith on his body was not ignited by accident]

We cannot ignore the fact that Van Gogh was born in a Protestant Christian family that has been passed down from generation to generation - his grandfather and father were both priests. He grew up listening to Bible stories and was familiar with psalms, sermons and theological language. For him, faith is not a cultural symbol, but a spiritual instinct.

When he was young, he preached in the Bolinage mining area of Belgium and lived with poor and sick miners. He gave up everything he had, gave out money and clothes, prayed for the sick, and washed the feet of the poor. His way of preaching was once considered "extreme" and even removed from the church, but in his own eyes, it was the way of following Christ. What Van Gogh did was exactly what a disciple who truly followed Jesus Christ did: not live in religion, but only in Christ!

"I want to live like Jesus, not just talk about him."

——Van Gogh, a letter to Tio

Such faith life continued to be extremely compassion and spiritual tension in later paintings.

[III. The struggle in his body is the true portrayal of the spiritual struggle]

You may say: What kind of Christian, Van Gogh is grumpy, and there are other bad behaviors that even people in the world despise. Yes, he smokes, drinks alcohol and prostitutes. He is grumpy, his relationship fails, and in order to please prostitutes, he is willing to cut off his ears and self-harm and falls into mental distress. These real and chaotic behaviors do not erase his spiritual identity, but rather reveal the fact that Van Gogh is the real man who "cries in the flesh and hopes in the spirit".

As Paul said, "If you are determined to do good, you will get me, but if you do it, you will not get me." ( Romans 7:18)

Van Gogh did not hide his corruption, but he did not give up running to God. His life is broken, and his canvas is the place where he continues to repent and pray. We can see his love and persistence for light from his picture, the dignified manifestation, the righteous pursuit, and the lighting of the darkness and the night sky!

From the distortion of the lines and the bursting of the brushstrokes, to the conflict of colors and the struggle of the canopy, these are not symbols of madness, but true portrayals of spiritual battles, which are unquestioning and following the Lord Christ!

Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear

After impulsive recklessness, Van Gogh did not avoid his embarrassment or even ugliness, but was willing to expose himself when the pain did not subside. This is clearly the attitude and behavior of Christians in the face of confession and repentance in the face of the Lord Christ. His two self-portraits are not only a sinner's gaze at the mirror, but also a broken soul looking up to God's lament and hope.

If cutting the ear under passion is a kind of sin, then now it is like a person admitting guilt to the Lord, handing over the ability to "obey orders" and putting everything in the hands of the Lord.

“In a painting I’d like to say something consoling, like a piece of music… I’d like to paint men or women with that je ne sais quoi of the eternal, of which the halo used to symbolize, and which we try to achieve through the radiance itself, through the vibrancy of our colorings.”

[IV. His painting is a kind of spiritual prayer]

In a letter to his younger brother on September 3, 1888, Van Gogh wrote:

“In a painting I’d like to say something consoling, like a piece of music… I’d like to paint men or women with that je ne sais quoi of the eternal, of which the halo used to symbolize, and which we try to achieve through the radiance itself, through the vibrancy of our colorings.”

This is not a metaphor, but the most real soul depiction of Van Gogh's painting.

播种的,是基督;

土地,是人心;

His "Sower" is the most typical example - the farmer sows seeds, and the sun sinks to the sky. This is not only a picture of labor, but also a spiritual fable:

It is Christ who sows seeds;

Land is people's hearts;

Light is the promise of heaven.

"Sunflower" is not a simple still life, but a soul born to the "true light". They are warm, burning and withered, as if they are talking about resurrection and renewal; they raise, distort and burn themselves, just like the life refined by divine fire.

He is not drawing for people to see, he is drawing for God to see, and he is drawing a life offering on the altar.

[Episs · I cried for Van Gogh for the first time]

In the hot summer vacation of 1990, when I was reading an art magazine in the Cultural Center, I saw a special article about the 100th anniversary of Van Gogh's birth. After returning home that day, I wrote a sentence on the title page of the sketchbook:

"Loneliness and pain are not only necessary for artists, but also necessary - because they are the source of creation."

At that moment, I didn't really understand how heavy this sentence was. But it is like a seed, buried in my life.

Since then, no matter where I live, work or wander, I have always taken a book with me - Desire for Life written by Owen Stone.

But it was not until November 4, 2023 that everything had a brand-new light. On that day, the Lord Jesus Christ united with me, the light of the Holy Spirit came to me, and my eyes were opened - for the first time, I really saw Van Gogh from the spiritual perspective and understood Van Gogh!

For the first time, I cried for Van Gogh.

Because, in the supreme and dazzling light of the Lord Jesus Christ, I clearly saw the unspeakable glory and struggle in Van Gogh's picture, as well as the firm desire and hope of following Christ!

I didn't really understand Van Gogh until I was 54 years old!

——It's not a suicide madman, but a martyred disciple.

Text / SHERWIN J. WANG

[Foreword · Written on the 135th anniversary of Van Gogh's death]

Vincent William Van Gogh passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 1890, in the room of Auberge Ravoux in Auville-sur-Oise, France.

I have to say:

Van Gogh's death is not that a madman can't suppress his irritable suicide when he has a psychotic attack. His short and brilliant life was obscured by several self-harm and rejection by several women. We only see the distorted lines and gorgeous and pure colors flowing in his picture, but we ignore the hidden truth behind it that should not be covered!

About him - art, life and heavenly hope.

[I. What he received was not training from the world, but gifts from heaven]

In the history of art, Van Gogh was a mystery: he painted "unlike" with rough brushstrokes, manic lines and unbalanced proportions. There are no traces of excess and gradualness left by the systematic training of the class, but the work burns with an unusual vitality and penetration, all of which seems to fall from the sky into his body.

This is not out of the skills of the college, but a direct acceptance of revelation from heaven. He does not pursue the "image" of realism, but calls for an "eternal truth" on the canvas. As the Apostle Paul said, "We have this treasure in the tile to show that this great power comes from God." ( 2 Corinthians 4:7) - Van Gogh's painting is this kind of "glory in the tile": rough and broken, but transparent with the light of heaven.

He (Van Gogh) once explained that information is more important than correct anatomy and technical perfection. He said that art does not have to be beautiful, but honest.

"I want to draw what I feel, feel what I draw." At the end of his life, he even considered painting a new version of The Potato Eater.

Frankly speaking today, compared with the standards of the classical academy, the shape of this work is stiff and not even accurate; compared with the mature impressionist standards, the picture is not only colorless, but also straightforwardly cloudy and dirty. But as a Christian, I have seen people's calmness and peace in the narrow wooden house with material scarcity and barrenness, which is entirely due to the warm light from the oil lamp above. As the scriptures say, "Man does not live by food alone, but by all the words that come from the mouth of the Lord." ( Deuteronomy 8:3)

There is always light in his picture.

Whether it's day or night; whether it's scenery, scenery, or even characters. However, these lights are not sunlight, but the dazzling "holy light" in the Lord Jesus Christ.

From the swirling sky in "Starry Night" to the burning golden in "Sunflower", from the promised sunset in "The Sower" to the surging sky in "Wheat Crows", the light has always been the soul of his picture. But the light does not come from the sun, but from a higher source - spiritual summons and hopes.
